Steam Link only recognizes TV as 480p [SOLVED]
I just got the Link and Controller bundle a day ago. The controller has worked flawlessly, but upon trying to set up the Link to my TV, it only recognizes it as 480p when the UI starts up. It displays in full screen and appears to be full resolution before streaming starts, but when I enter streaming I get black bars on the top and bottom and the resolution is horrible. I have tinkered with the display (or lack thereof) and stream output settings to no avail. Has anyone had a similar experience or know of a possible solution?

EDIT: It turns out it was a problem with the firmware I was running on my Seiki TV. Changing the firmware version solved the issue.

Does your TV support 1080p or just 1080i. Also, are you connected via HDMI direct to the TV?
It supports full 1080p with the rest of my devices (ex. PS3, WII U etc) as well as when my computer is hooked up directly via HDMI. I have the Steam Link plugged in directly with HDMI.
You might try opting in to the beta on Steam Link and see if anything is different.
You need to have steam beta and link beta, although I think stable of both should work well.
Then you have to set up the resolution of your computer monitor to be the same as your tv (1080p). Try streaming now. Because there are some weird quircks... steam streaming tries to keep aspect but there are some calculation misses. I sometimes get ver big partial windows (upscaled), because the aspect is wrong, and the windowsize was out of the ordinary.
I updated Steam and the Link to beta versions. My monitor is set to the desired/same resolution and still no luck. I even tried using the TV as my monitor on another HDMI while using the Link and still no dice. When my PC is plugged in directly my TV is allowing for all of the resolutions, including 1080p, 1080i, 1080p@true120hz, and 4K. For some reason the Steam Link only wants to boot up to the 720x480p when plugged into the TV. I hooked the Link up to my monitor as well as the small, older TV in my bedroom (which happens to only support 1080i) and it worked flawlessly at the correct resolution and full screen both times.
What model TV are you having this problem with?

What is the resolution you are using on your host PC?

The Link starts up in 480p mode when it shows the booting logo. Then, if the TV supports it, it switches to 1080p. Can you double check the TV info and verify what resolution the Link is using after the Link boots up?

You could also try reconnecting the HDMI cable after the Link has booted, and see what resolution the TV tells you it is using.

On the Link, go to System > Save Debug Logs. Then start streaming, wait a minute, end streaming. Then on your PC find this file and post it on pastebin or something so we can take a look.

I am using the Seiki SE39UY04 [www.amazon.com]

I have tried 1080p@60hz while connected to my computer monitor. While connected to my TV via HDMI I tried 1080p@60hz, 1080p@120hz, 4K@30hz, and 1080i.

You're correct. The boot screen is always shows as 720x480p@60hz. When the Link starts my TV shows "DVI 720x480p 60hz" and once the Link gets past the splash screen it switches to "HDMI 480p 60hz"

I've tried reconnected the HDMI and different HDMI cables and ports. It didn't help but did confirm the resolution to be 480p.

Here is my debug [pastebin.com]

Similar issue. Bounces through a 4:3 resolution on the way to doing anything, which screws up games with launchers. Displays on both ends are 1080p+.
Displaying stats shows that it's streaming at... 684x384. What.
Workaround found. Launch in big picture via link, exit big picture to get the desktop, manually set the res from the desktop and then launch the target game without reentering Big Picture.

Noted: It decided somewhere along the line that the connection is VGA. Hopefully this can be seen/fixed by a developer, but for now there is a valid workaround.
That didn't seem to have any effect either.
Sorry to hear it; it sorted out my problem, but it looks like you're running into something else.
That is weird. I am not fully understanding what you did when you say

"I have tried 1080p@60hz while connected to my computer monitor. While connected to my TV via HDMI I tried 1080p@60hz, 1080p@120hz, 4K@30hz, and 1080i."

That sounds like you were verifying the displays were good using different devices other than the Link (computer, laptop etc). It sounds like the TV and monitor are working as expected.

Did you try to plug in the Link to other monitors besides the TV? Does it go from 480p to 1080p on other displays, or is it stuck in 480p on all types of displays you have tried? This is before starting streaming to the PC.

Messyjess80, sorry that was a bit hard to follow. To clarify, I originally had my PC connect to my monitor and the Link to my living room TV. I later had both my PC and Link connectected to different inputs of the TV. I tried setting my PC to several resolutions to see if that would affect the Link, but it did not. I did attempt to connect the Link to my PC monitor, which worked correctly, as well as the TV in another room, which also worked correctly. I'm at work right now so I won't be able to verify which point during startup the resolution changes on the other screens until tomorrow morning.
To provide a little update, testing on both my monitor and the other TV shows that at the splash screen it displays at 480p, and once it gets to the interface it correctly switches to 1080p and 1080i respectively.
