Unlike Dr. W. Afton, I will not be coming back to That's Not My Neighbor.

I was very excited to play this game—especially when I saw it was listed for only $3. I’m a huge fan of anything creepy and loved the concept of acting as the barrier between tired residents coming home and doppelgängers trying to doppel up a gang of humans. However, after a short initial playthrough of the campaign, I quickly realized that the game’s repetitiveness—and its lack of story, content, or really much of anything—felt like going to McDonald’s late at night only to discover they’d just re-fried old nuggets and fries so they wouldn't have to clean the oil again.

None of the endings had real cutscenes or gave the impression that much effort had been put into them. The homeless man who asks nonsensical math problems (which can’t be solved without a guide—what’s the point of them??) gives a “reward” that adds absolutely nothing to the game. Yet he continues to show up every day, even if you’ve already answered his questions once. The same goes for the mildly seductive horror clown who forces you to play a card game I still don’t understand. You can win just by spam-clicking cards until something works—and when you inevitably win, nothing happens! No story, no unique additions, just a recurring, unavoidable, bland card game. Even giving the player a fidget tool for their workspace would have at least provided a small sense of progression.

The gameplay itself is very simple, and after one or two playthroughs, it becomes second nature to know what to look for. You can pretty much breeze through each level. If there had been more to the interrogation mechanics, or additional steps to trip you up, I might’ve remained more interested. But at the end of the day, the game is only $3, so I can’t complain too much.

That said, the Nightmare Mode and the unique wanted poster characters were the highlight of my time with this game. There were lots of interesting and cryptic-looking skins, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing each of them for the first time.

If the story and characters had more depth, maybe my opinion would’ve been different. Trying to 100% this game, however, felt like eating bad pizza with your lactose-intolerant girlfriend: starts off mediocre, ends up smelling like regret. The wanted posters achievement made me wish I had a doppelgänger of my own—just to force them to restart the level for hours until I got the posters I needed. Though honestly, a party pack of Twisted Tea would have a nightmare seeing two of me coming.

I wouldn’t recommend this game to others, but if you have a few bucks and an hour to kill, it could serve its purpose. Just don’t be surprised when you hear those same gargling sounds in your sleep.

the itch.io game was way better, but this game is still fun and has a lot of replay value. also the new gimmicks that were added make it more fun
