Late 2023 this game got it's 2.0 update, which made some very fundamental changes to the games mechanics. If the last time you played was about 5 years ago chances are the game will be pretty different to how you remember it.

Also, don't expect your old saves to work correctly, if at all. I hear some people got them working but they do seem to be in the minority.

As such I would strongly recommend playing it though at least once vanilla before you go anywhere near modding.
Partly because a lot of the mods you might grab would likely have been with the pre 2.0 in mind so they likely wouldn't have worked. Or at least not as expected.
But mostly because with all the changes it would be a good idea to look though it from start to finish to figure out what old changes you still want or new areas you now want mods in, in the first place.

Oh. If you haven't already highly I recommend grabbing the Phantom Liberty expansion if you haven't already. 100% worth it and massively adds to what was already there.
Don't go near the option to start the game when the new area kicks in (unless you're the sort to just build a character at complete random with your eyes shut). It'll do that on it's own about mid way though the game after Act 2 starts after you leave a "certain church".

so complete vanilla again then try modding? alright i buy the dlc when its on next sale
Defo vanilla so you can get a good handle on stuff that's changed a lot/stuff that's been added. Then mod 'til your heart's content subsequent playthroughs ;-)

In a nutshell? Yeah, pretty much.

Duh. If you don't mod you might as well be a console peasant.

Vanilla for the first playthrough is not bad advice. I would avoid installing collections...they always seem to include things that go wrong and cause immense headaches for troubleshooting, or just things that you don't want.

Basically, don't install mods that change the game. However there are mods that make some tweaks that do make the game more playable, and smooth a few rough edges. Deceptious BugFixes (needs Deceptious Quest Core as well) is great. Better Loot Markers, Ragdoll Physics Overhaul, Vehicle No Despawn are a few I like. Leave the flying vehicles, radical combat rebalances and etc. for later games when you crave something new.

Post 2.0 is almost a completely different thing than pre 2.0.
There's enough difference between the two that you are basically better off forgetting you ever played the game and treat it like a new to you thing.
Start with vanilla again first, then add, tweak, adjust later if you feel the need.
i didnt mod my game at all . i enjoy original visuals and how game looks . sure helps i have 5090 so everything max out to the teeth so its looks insane on 4k

The bulk of mods are clothing, poses and textures more focused towards the screenshot "photographers" than anything that actually warrants another gameplay based on mods. So if you like how the game looks and plays, not much reason to play with mods and also, not much reasons to play without.
I never played day one, stayed away till the ultimate edition became $35. I didn't finish my first play through without mods. Just me. That said, most mods at least all frameworks are updated and working well. I don't see many further updates so easy and light maintenance to mod. Unless CPDR drops smaller DLC/Multiplayer/FSR4. You can use the Nexus and its mod manager, I heard Mod Organizer has a tool that will work with Cyberpunk 2077, and what I do, manual. That said I might to go Mo2 eventually I am putting together a mod list/collection on nexus containing about 475+ mods, SFW generally, more romantic activities, lore friendly definitely, Easter Eggs everywhere! (swords, guns, cars, characters, posters and more) game-play overhaul, enemies, police, and gangs, along with HD textures on the city and main characters, opened city areas, unlocked h10 mega-building, massive population and traffic increases, custom cars in traffic, custom ads animations, LUT and Reshade < optional I love it, and more! But I also run all this on a 5700x & RX 7900XT 1440p native medium ray tracing < optimized settings from Hardware Unboxed - I get low 45fps with all the added NPCs and cars when all hell breaks lose but I maintain 55-65fps average in city higher outside in badlands. I am testing optimized, RT, and RDNA3 mods as well to see if I can get better performance at native generally all upscalers until DLSS3.5 and FSR4 weren't worth the trash look. I aim for a collection DLC package like another update 2.3 or 2.77 version of the game. I hope to finishing testing and adding in a few more mods by end of May.

I mean quality of life mods are always good

*skip into (like the splash screen when you launch the game, not the intro mission ect)
*flashlight
*stand still please (makes the character stand still while editing them)
*mod that lets you reallocate your stats/attributes

those are the mods i have

I know theres one to auto pick up loot and an other to auto disassemble things into crafting material
then theres on to let you fast travel where and when ever by clicking on the map in the map menu

other then that Id normally just add things that give spice of life with out messing with the game difficulty, but the game doesnt seem to be able to do that, since like you cant really add new guns to the game it seems, just replace them
There are now a lot of added weapon mods, the guns in my collection are the Doom shotgun, AK77, NV4, Combat Master (John Wick Gun), Volk Tech AK, HA-9 Kurtz, Nokota Taipan, RSH-12, VK-47 Flatline, R-301 Carbine, Dixon Crossbow, VegaMelee weapons, and many more. Just gotta look around for them.
Maybe "Dark Future" as a mod; it adds the need to drink, eat, and sleep, as well as injuries and a stress system. For me, this mod completed the game; but I like survival mechanics.
Otherwise, I'd try vanilla first.

Add a bunch of 4K and LOD mods, it makes the game look absolutely stunning. However, the game will run with 21-23GB VRAM, but it's worth it.

Such a shame CDPR left the Red Engine behind. CP2077 is a work of art, CDPR really knows their stuff IMO.

Balder and Mark I agree I upped the Gangs, Police, and Enemies, haven't tried Dark Future but now I might. And yes HD rework and other LODs will take this over the top, but yes I do exceed my VRAM at 20GB a little bit and I get a hit down in fps but ♥♥♥♥ is it gorgeous. So a 16GB VRAM GPU minimum is a must for this game while modding.
